CHAPTER 23 Genealogy and Ministration of the Levites

1 And David was older and full of days. And [³took reign ¹Solomon ²his son] instead of him over Israel. 2 And he brought together all the rulers of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites. 3 And [³were counted ¹the ²Levites] from thirty years old and up. And [⁴was ¹the ²number ³of them] according to their head count of males -- thirty and eight thousand. 4 Of these were foremen over the works of the house of the lord -- twenty-four thousand; and scribes and judges -- six thousand; 5 and four thousand gatekeepers; and four thousand praising the lord with instruments, which made praise to the lord. 6 And [²divided ³them ¹David] into daily rotations to the sons of Levi -- to Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 7 And to the family of Gershon -- Ladan and Shimei. 8 The sons to Ladan -- the ruler Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel -- three. 9 The sons of Shimei -- Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran -- three. These were rulers of the families of Ladan. 10 And sons of Shimei -- Jahath, and Zizah, and Jeush, and Beriah. These are sons of Shimei -- four. 11 And Jahath was the ruler, and Zizah the second. And Jeush and Beriah did not multiply sons; and they were assigned for the house of the family for numbering as one. 12 The sons of Kohath -- Amram, Izhar, Hebron, Uzziel -- four. 13 The sons of Amram -- Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was separated to sanctify the holy of holies, he and his sons unto the eon, to burn incense before the lord, to officiate to him, and to invoke upon his name unto the eon. 14 And as far as Moses the man of God, his sons were called unto the tribe of Levi. 15 The sons of Moses -- Gershom and Eliezer. 16 The sons of Gershom -- Shebuel the ruler. 17 And there were sons to Eliezer -- Rehabiah the ruler. But there were no [²sons to Eliezer ¹other]. And the sons of Rehabiah increased in stature. 18 The sons of Izhar -- Shelomith the ruler. 19 The sons of Hebron -- Jeriah the ruler, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth. 20 The sons of Uzziel -- Michah the ruler, and Jesiah the second. 21 The sons of Merari -- Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli -- Eleazar and Kish. 22 And Eleazar died, and there were no sons to him, but only daughters. And [⁴took ⁵them ¹the sons ²of Kish ³their brethren]. 23 The sons of Mushi -- Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth -- three. 24 These were the sons of Levi according to the houses of their families; rulers of their families according to their numbering, according to the number of their names, according to their head count, the ones doing the works of the ministration of the house of the lord, from twenty years and up. 25 For David said, [⁴rested ¹The lord ²God ³of Israel] his people, and encamped in Jerusalem unto the eon. 26 And also to the Levites it is not to lift the tent, nor any of its items for its ministration. 27 For in the [²words ³of David ¹last] was the number of the sons of Levi from twenty years and up. 28 For he established them for the hand of the sons of Aaron, to officiate in the house of the lord, over the courtyards, and over the cubicles, and over the cleansing of all the holy things, and over the works of the ministration of the house of God; 29 and for the bread loaves of the place setting, and for the fine flour of the sacrifice offering, and for the [²cakes ¹unleavened], and for the frying pan, and for the mixture, and for every measure; 30 and to stand in the morning to praise and to make acknowledgement to the lord, and so the evening; 31 and upon all the offerings of whole burnt-offerings to the lord on the Sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the holidays, according to number, according to the ordinance upon them, always before the lord; 32 and they shall guard the watches of the tent of the testimony, and the watch of the holy place, and the watches of the sons of Aaron their brethren, to officiate in the house of the lord.
